Rebreather Training Council Publishes First Standard

The Rebreather Training Council (RTC) is made up of training agencies that provide courses for divers using rebreathers. The RTC’s mission is to promote the safe use of rebreathers by creating industry training standards and operational protocols. Having agreed to minimum standards makes it easier to compare certifications from different agencies. PADI is a founding RTC member and active participant in council meetings.

In August 2017, the RTC published the first training standard – RTC Rebreather Diver Level 1. This standard describes the minimum required training for diver to dive with a rebreather to a maximum depth of 30 metres/100 feet with no planned stage decompression stops and without supervision by an instructor or divemaster. The PADI Advanced Rebreather Diver course meets or exceeds all the requirements of RTC Rebreather Diver Level 1 standards.

Sanctum – Movie Opens Friday and Features Cave Diving

Terry Cummins
Director of Marketing PADI Technical Division

Sanctum, the new 3-D movie featuring cave diving comes out in the US this Friday. View the trailer at the bottom of this post (email subscribers may need to click through to see it)

You can also read a sneak preview by Terry Cummins, Director of Marketing – PADI Technical Division. Terry  knows some of the folks involved with the film and was invited to the cast and crew screening. He comments:

From a diving marketing point of view, I do not think this film would turn the average person off cave diving or caving in general. After all diving, rebreathers and caving will never be for everyone anyway.

The film was produced by James Cameron (The Abyss, Avatar)  and is supposedly based on a true story. Want more behind the scenes info? We have an article in the 1st Quarter Undersea Journal where Karl Shreeves interviews producer Andrew Wight about Sanctum.

Changes to DSAT Tec Diving Program

In September, DSAT will roll out the newly structured and revised Tec Deep Diver program.

Renamed “The Tec Diver Course,” the new program consists of three separate sub-courses and certification levels: DSAT Tec 40, Tec 45 and Tec 50. The numbers in each course name corresponds with the maximum depth limit (in metres) of that certification.

New DSAT Tec Diver program chart(email subscribers, click through to view the chart above)

There’s also a new instructor level – Tec Instructor. Tec Instructors may teach Tec 40 only. Requirements for Tec Deep Instructor and Tec Trimix Instructor remain unchanged.

From now until the end of the year, PADI Instructors with appropriate technical diving instructor ratings can qualify for direct crossover to become DSAT Tec Instructors free of charge. Applicants must hold:

1. a qualifying technical diving certification that allows decompression dives to 45 metres/145 feet with double cylinder, open circuit scuba equipment using air, enriched air and oxygen.

2. a qualifying technical instructor rating to teach open circuit decompression diving using air and enriched air to a depth of 40 meters/130 feet.

For more info, please visit the excellent DSAT Chat blog for a complete run down of the changes to our Tec Deep program. Also, look for an article in the fourth quarter 2009 Undersea Journal / Training Bulletin.

Those of you attending DEMA may be interested in a half-day TecRec seminar on 5 November.
