The Internet: Coming Soon to an Airline Near You

The first wi-fi enabled commercial flight lifted off yesterday. American Airlines was first to the punch utilizing a service called Go-Go. The Wall Street Journal has a nice video explaining how the in flight internet service works.

The connection won’t be broadband speed. The connection is similar to accessing the web via Blackberry or iPhone. Blessedly, the airline will not allow VOiP services such as Skype, and using cell phones during flight will be verboten.

Many of the airlines have announced plans to offer in-flight wi-fi. Theoretically, you could run a trip to Cozumel and have Advanced Open Water students complete their course online during the flight.
